Ever since youth I have been fascinated by animation. Childhood heroes were Quickdraw McGraw, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. These days kids have their favorite toon characters on stickers and notebooks, but years ago if you wanted a "cool notebook", the drawings had to be done by hand...so I was primarily a spiral notebook artist....haha. By early high school my sketches of Charles Schultz's Peanuts characters were study hall entertainment, along with a classmate's Tumbleweeds drawings ( CLICK HERE to view samples). Gary Larson's Far Side and The Muppets characters later hit just about bull's eye of my tendency toward imaginative humor.
While at Eagle Eyrie with a youth group I had the privilege of seeing hand drawn cartoons for the first time. An extensive autographed collection of original comic art from all the popular artists of the 70's was put on display during an evangelism workshop. It was worth the traveling to get to the retreat just for the chance to see those drawings.
After high school, youthful enthusiasm for comical art had to be dismissed for more practical pursuits. It was reawakened suddenly in the fall of 2003 when a friend insisted that I watch a video. It was Pixar's Monsters, Inc. I was always so busy...so I had never heard of Pixar or the movie (can you believe it?). After five minutes of watching Sulley and Mike on that widescreen TV, all the enthusiasm for comical art and animation woke up, never to slumber again.
Which brings us to now....and after a few years of playing with 3D art, I'm taking the first few steps toward animation. For now this pretty much amounts to "spiral notebook art" on the internet...but hey, it brightened the day for friends years ago, maybe it can do the same now. It has certainly always brightened my day to regularly exercise a sense of humor. The older I get, the more I tend to think that humor and God's love are the only two things in this life that remain the same...so we may as well enjoy both to the fullest while we are on the journey.
Have a blessed day!
